I have thought that this is a good opportunity to wrap up the current situation and what we can expect in the next months to come. The coronavirus outbreak is hitting everybody worldwide.
Since the cancellation of the Rabat Premier League last week, we have been facing new cancellations / postponements and at this time it is uncertain when this situation will improve in the way of allowing us to resume the activity.
For the time being, we can expect that the next event that has possibilities to take place is the qualification event for Tokyo, that was initially scheduled for May and has been recently postponed for June, and where 3 athletes per category will get a place for the Tokyo Olympic Games. All other activities in and out of the WKF calendar are being cancelled; this is really bad and unprecedented news, but the worldwide situation gives no other alternative.
If we would not be able to celebrate our qualification event, the Planning Commission and the EC are working to analyse the best alternatives. We have the advantage of the 21 events that have built up the Olympic Standing, this is, real and objective results in which to base our work.
We will continue updating you on the major development that will happen in the next weeks. This is a rapidly changing situation and at this time it is impossible to determine what will happen not only in the next weeks but not even in the next days.
The IOC has confimed that the Tokyo Games will take place on schedule, and this is the basic assumption that we are taking in all our estimations. However the athletes of many countries are facing major hurdles in their training programmes, and also the qualification systems are being affected by the situation. All the athletes deserve the right of competing in a level playing field, with equal opportunities, and we trust that all the institutions involved will make possible to guarantee such an important condition.
Summarizing, now that we have finished the first phase of our Tokyo qualification, we will concentrate in the second one, that is the qualification event in June, and we will continue focused and ready to face all the necessary adaptation measures to the developments that without any doubt will come in the next days and weeks. For this we count with your understanding and with your collaboration and work. Working all together we can achieve what otherwise would be impossible to reach.
